Pitch Letter
Dear Editor:
We’ve all see Indiana Jones portrayed
in the movies, but what would happen if the erstwhile adventurer
decided to write a book?
Now, with The Portal (Little
Moose Press, January 2005), Renaissance Man and first-time
author Keith White certainly comes close. Like Indiana
Jones, White has an innocuous career — he’s a dentist who
lives in Northern California with his wife and son — but,
also like the beloved fictional character, he’s a bold
risk-taker who flies plans, travels the world, studies
history and was a competitive sportsman.
In The Portal, White marries his love of
danger with his deep knowledge of history to create a Raiders
of the Lost Art meets The Da Vinci Code type
novel. In the book, Jack Sullivan, a would-be pilot falsely
accused of murder, teams up with Kelly Wilson, an ingénue
OSS agent, to try and outwit one of Nazi Germany most ruthless
soldiers. The three race to find an ancient Columbian Indian
artifact that opens a portal to time travel and will allow
its holder to determine the outcome of the war.
“I love adventure, and I love good stories,” White says. “Most
places in this book are real. The stunts in the airplane
are all possible. The floor plan of the Mont-St-Michel
is relatively accurate. There are many bits of trivia that
are historically accurate. To me all these things
make a story more fun.”
The Portal is available immediately for
review, and author Keith White is available to discuss:
America’s ongoing fascination with wwIi: Something
about the second World War, be it mesmerizing tales of
heroism or the conviction that this was the last war in
which there were such stark icons of right and wrong, continues
to fascinate readers in the United States. As a history
buff who has traveled extensively throughout Europe and
South America, White can discuss how WWII affected and
continues to affect people around the world.
What if…? and Time travel — the two big issues for
science fiction: Some believe there are no new stories.
Others are convinced there are only 32 possible plots.
Keith White proves both wrong by bringing two of science
fiction’s most complex issues together in one book. White
can discuss how he used his lifelong interest in history
and travel to create a plot that is fresh and new.
Writing for a visual audience: How do you write
for an audience that gets most of its information and entertainment
from the visual media of television and movies? White can
discuss the technique he used to create highly visual images
that will appeal to almost everyone.
being a reneissance man: how can a mild-mannered
dentist also be a pilot, world traveler, Amazon explorer,
history buff and former competitive sportsman? White will
discuss how he juggles multiple roles that, by the way,
just happen to include husband and father.
Keith White is not your average author. He’s a real-life
Indiana Jones who created a classic science fiction tale
that dramatically reflects his love of adventure and history.
I look forward to speaking with you soon to schedule an
interview with Keith White.
Sincerely,
WIlliam Diesel
