What if you had the power to control the future?
what if you could change the past?
Real-life adventurer
Keith White weaves a fascinating tale of history, espionage,
intrigue, science fiction and romance.
Keith White is a fellow who likes to ask, What if…? And in his
first novel, The Portal (Little
Moose Press, January
2005), the real-life dentist who moonlights as a small-craft
pilot, world-traveler and history buff, tackles a doozy: What
if the power to determine the outcome of World War II rested
in the hands of two anti-heroes: the tart-tongued daughter of
a murdered missionary and an asthmatic Air Corps reject on the
run for killing his former girlfriend’s husband?
In The Portal, White does more than create a doorway
that enables time travel. He delves into the touchy and complex
issue of what truly makes a hero.
It’s 1943, and Jack Sullivan wants nothing more than to become
a pilot and fight the Nazis. Although he’s the best athlete in
his squad, Sullivan is tossed out of the military for the third
time when his superiors discover he failed to reveal a childhood
bout with asthma. Returning to Texas in disgrace, Jack seems
destined to lead of life without distinction until a tryst with
a former girlfriend leaves her husband dead and Jack on the run
for murder. When his uncle Sully arranges for him to escape the
authorities by taking a job with beat-up plane-for-hire service
in Panama, Jack begins an adventure that soon has him crossing
paths with Kelly Wilson, an inexperienced OSS agent whose father,
a missionary, died under mysterious circumstances in the Amazon
jungle. Jack and Kelly quickly find themselves racing against
Heinz Bodecker, a Nazi operative who, like Kelly, is searching
the jungle for an ancient
relic that may hold the secret to winning the war.
With Jack and Kelly working for the Allies and Bodecker and
his henchmen working for the Nazis, The Portal leads
readers on an adventure that journeys across three continents
and leaps between the war-torn 1940s and one possible version
of modern-day Europe and the United States.
White’s fast-paced plot, likeable heroes, witty dialogue and
ruthless villains will resurrect fond memories of Raiders
of the Lost Ark while the mounting sexual tension between
Jack and Kelly will remind many of Romancing the Stone.
The Portal is a rollicking fun book that will
keep readers spellbound from start to finish.
